Greece Travel Guide
Ancient civilizations, islands and the blue Aegean
Ancient civilizations, islands and the blue Aegean.
Greek travel works best when ancient heritage and island life are given equal importance. Athens is a compelling base for classical sites and contemporary neighbourhoods, while the Peloponnese, Crete and the Aegean islands each have their own archaeology, food, landscapes and slower rhythms.
Our Greece guide connects individual city and regional pages into practical itineraries. The destinations below are a curated selection, not a claim to include every place in the country. Before travel, confirm reservations, transport services, site access and current advisories with official providers.

Understand the places
Classical sanctuaries, Byzantine churches, Venetian fortresses and archaeological museums connect different layers of Greek history. When visiting major sites, allow enough time for the associated museums, not only the outdoor ruins.
Eat and explore
Explore regional olive oil, fresh fish, seasonal vegetable dishes, cheeses and slow meals in tavernas. Crete and the islands have distinct culinary cultures; ask about seasonal local dishes.
Move with care
Domestic flights, ferries, coaches and rental cars cover different routes. Island connections are not equally frequent year-round, and ferry schedules may be affected by weather.
When to go
April to June and September to October often offer favourable conditions for many cultural itineraries. Island summers are lively and hot; winter is better for mainland urban exploration than some smaller islands.
