Japan Travel Guide
A journey between luminous cities and quiet traditions
A journey between luminous cities and quiet traditions.
Japan is best explored as a series of different regions rather than one continuous city break. The capital’s contemporary neighbourhoods contrast with Kyoto’s temples, Nara’s early monumental sites, the food culture of Osaka and the mountain landscapes of the Japanese Alps. Northern Hokkaido and southern Okinawa show the remarkable breadth of the archipelago.
Our Japan guide connects individual city and regional pages into practical itineraries. The destinations below are a curated selection, not a claim to include every place in the country. Before travel, confirm reservations, transport services, site access and current advisories with official providers.

Practical planning themes to help put together a balanced itinerary.
Understand the places
Temple etiquette, seasonal festivals, crafts and regional architecture are essential to the experience. Allow time for slower visits to gardens, historic streets and museums, especially in Kyoto and Kanazawa. Sacred spaces should be approached with care and local rules respected.
Eat and explore
Food extends far beyond sushi: ramen styles vary by region, Kyoto offers refined kaiseki traditions, Osaka is famous for street snacks, and Hokkaido for seafood and dairy. Explore markets without assuming every stall serves the same way.
Move with care
The rail network connects major urban centres, but local buses, rural rail and domestic flights may be practical for outlying areas. Compare individual train fares against passes and reserve busy-season journeys early.
When to go
Cherry blossoms generally draw visitors in spring, while autumn colours create another popular period. Summers can be humid and winters snowy in the north. Seasonal timing varies considerably by latitude.
